After attending Linklater’s funeral Reid and Drake investigate the murder of a young woman and the abduction of her new-born baby from the London hospital. The fact that the woman has a tail leads them to a circus freak show where another exhibit, John Goode, proves to be the child’s father but he panics and flees. Goode spent time in a mental asylum treated by Dr Crabbe, who explains that Goode had a deformity and points them towards Goode’s doctor father, a man obsessed with perfection and anxious to stamp out any abnormalities.
